Proprietor of Tow-Mater Towing and Salvage, Mater comes off as a bit of a bumpkin, but we discover that along with a heart of gold, this silly old tow truck has an inspired sense of fun and adventure.

Mater sees the bright side of any situation and is the first to befriend McQueen.
He is the self-proclaimed "World's Best Backwards Driver" and his lifelong dream is to ride in a helicopter.

The character Mater was first inspired by an old, rusty truck seen on a vacant lot in Galena, KS. This is the original 1951 International L-170 Series "boom" truck. The extra-long boom was probably used used to lift equipment out of local area mines.
